Do you know how BAD the crime rates are in the USA?
Get ready to be shocked?
Here are the crime stats for 2010. This information was taken from the FBI'S (UCR). UCR stands for uniform crime reporting. The FBI keeps stats on all crime reports from all agencies in the USA. I have broken down this information into categories according to type of crime.
Burglaries - The UCR defines burglary as an unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or theft. When classifying a burglary offense, use of force to gain entry does not have to occur. There are three classifications for burglary 1. forcible entry 2. unlawful entry were no force is used 3. attempted forcible entry. There was an estimate of 2,159,878 burglaries in 2010. Of all these burglaries, 60.5% were forcible entry, 33.2 percent was unlawful entries, and the rest was forcible attempts. All of these victims combined took a lost of about 4.6 billion dollars. The average lost per victim was around $2000. 73% of all of these burglaries were residential properties.
Larceny-Theft - UCR defines this as unlawful taking, leading, carrying, or riding away of property from the possession or constructive possession of another. For example, taking a bicycle, taking motor vehicle parts, shoplifting, picking pockets, or the stealing of any property or article that is not taken by force and violence or by fraud. Attempted larcenies are included. Embezzlement, confidence games, forgery, check fraud, etc., are excluded. There was around 6,000,000 larceny thefts in the US in 2010. For every 100,000 people, 2,003 were victims of larceny theft. On average each victim lost $988 per offense. This totals over $6.1 billion lost due to larceny theft crimes.
Violent Crime Rates - UCR defines this into four offenses. They are murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The data presented in Crime in the United States reflect the Hierarchy Rule, which requires that only the most serious offense in a multiple-offense criminal incident be counted. The descending order of UCR violent crimes are murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, followed by the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft. Although arson is also a property crime, the Hierarchy Rule does not apply to the offense of arson. In cases in which an arson occurs in conjunction with another violent or property crime, both crimes are reported, the arson and the additional crime. In 2010, there were an estimated 1,246,248 violent crimes nationwide. For every 100,000 people, 403 were victims of violent crimes. The highest number of violent crimes were aggravated assaults coming in at 62 percent. Robbery accounted for 29 percent of the total violent crimes. Forcible rape accounted for 6.8 percent, and murder accounted for 1.2 percent of all of the violent crimes in 2010.
Let me put it in simple terms. Every 3 seconds 1 property crime occurs. Every 10 seconds 1 burglary occurs. Every 20 seconds someone is becoming the victim of a violent crime. Every 35 seconds someone is loosing their life due to a grave assault. Every minute here in the US someone is being robbed. Every 2 minutes someone is being forcibly raped.
Today, yes right now, 1 out of 5 homes will be broken into or worse they will experience a home invasion.
These statistics are overwhelming and should be an eye opener to everyone. We all are aware of the US economies issues and most will agree the issues in the US are not going to be fixed over night. So I ask, what can we do to prevent us from becoming another statistic? The answers are on this website! We as Americans need to protect us and our loved ones. Gone are the days were we left our doors to our homes unlocked as we went to the corner store. In this day and age, we all need to protect our home and ourselves.
